Name:  Jed Norgrove

Age:  22

Job Title:  Recently Qualified instructor/Yard Person

Working Hours:  Full time for summer whilst at Uni

Although he's one of the youngest members of the Dulson Training team, Jed has already built up an impressive amount of experience.

He first joined Dulson seven years ago, working around his studies. At the age of 16 Jed spent four years working as part of the Red Bull Racing team, gaining valuable experience in a fast-paced, high-performance environment, whilst still working 2 days a week with Dulson.

Starting out as a yard person, Jed quickly developed his skills and knowledge. It wasn't long before taking the next step and working towards his LGV licences became the obvious progression.

He completed his accredited Yard Shunter qualification before going on to pass the Car and Trailer course at the age of 18. Shortly afterwards, the training route changed to the Car to Class 1 licence, and at just 19 years old, Jed successfully gained his Class 1 licence. Never one to stop learning, he has also added a Coach licence to his list.

"The coach test was very different," he laughs. "It's a bit like driving a big artic, but definitely more challenging."

Away from Dulson, Jed is currently studying PE at university and is considering a career in teaching after graduating. For him, there are plenty of similarities between teaching PE and training future HGV drivers.

"Whether you're teaching sport or driving, it's all about helping people learn, building confidence and adapting your approach to suit each individual."

Being a younger instructor has occasionally meant overcoming first impressions.

"Some students can be a little sceptical at first because of my age," he says. "But once you demonstrate your knowledge and show that you know what you're doing, they quickly gain confidence in you. Seeing them go on to pass makes it all worthwhile."

Like many of the Dulson team, Jed believes that no two students are the same. Building confidence, adapting teaching techniques and creating a positive learning environment are all part of helping people achieve their goals.

What's the best part about working at Dulson Training?

Everyone is friendly and gets on really well. There's a genuine family atmosphere here, and it motivates you to give 100% every day. We regularly do team-building events, and it's just a great place to work because everyone enjoys being here.

What advice would you give someone thinking about becoming an instructor?

It's a brilliant job and a great opportunity for experienced drivers to give something back by helping people start new careers. It's incredibly rewarding. As a younger instructor, confidence has been really important, along with showing your knowledge so students trust you. You also need to be able to adapt your teaching style because everyone learns differently.

What advice would you give someone about to start their HGV training?

Enjoy the experience. Driving a truck comes with a lot of responsibility, so trust your instructors. They've been there, done it, and they're there to help you pass.

What's your most memorable moment at Dulson Training?

It has to be one of our team-building go-karting days. Because I'd worked with Red Bull Racing, everyone expected me to win, so there was definitely a bit of pressure. Everything was going perfectly until one of my wheels fell off... I was still in the lead though!
