Name: Graham Berry
Age: 54
Job Title: Instructor
Working Hours: Full time
Graham has been an instructor with Dulson Training for the past 18 months, bringing a wealth of experience from across training, the police service and HGV driving.
After spotting the role advertised on Indeed, Graham felt his previous experience made him a good fit. He spent nine and a half years working as a trainer for BT before joining the police service, where he spent 15 years, including 11 years working in traffic. After leaving the police, Graham moved into HGV driving and has now held his licence for 10 years.
For Graham, the most rewarding part of his current role is seeing students progress from their first day through to passing their test.
“The best bit of the job for me is seeing people pass, seeing their journeys from start to finish.”
He particularly enjoys seeing students who have struggled or doubted themselves go on to pass and gain their licence.
Graham believes his experience as a HGV driver, knowledge of road traffic legislation and background in training have all helped shape his approach as an instructor. He adapts his teaching style to suit each student and is always willing to try new approaches.
“I like to keep an open mind about the way I teach and try different things to see what works. It is important to always be open to learning.”

His advice to anyone considering going for their HGV licence is simple:
“Don’t think about it, just go for it.”
He also recommends gaining additional qualifications where possible, including Class 1 and ADR, as they can provide an extra string to your bow.
For anyone considering becoming an instructor, Graham says if you have the relevant experience, go for it.
“It is really rewarding and enjoyable, and more sociable hours than being a full-time HGV driver.”
