A Final Journey Worthy of a Life on the Road

The haulage industry has always been more than just a job. For many, it is a way of life.
Long hours, early starts, late finishes and nights spent away from home mean that life is often built around the road rather than the other way around. For generations of families, trucking has been passed down through the years, becoming not only a career but a shared passion. Lifelong friendships are forged in truck stops, stories are exchanged over countless miles, and memories are made behind the wheel and at shows and socials.
When someone who has dedicated their life to the industry reaches the end of that journey, many families want their farewell to reflect the person they were and the life they lived. That often means choosing a final journey aboard a truck rather than a traditional hearse, adding a deeply personal tribute that honours a lifetime spent on the road.
It is a vision that sits at the very heart of PNW Carriage Masters.
Founded by husband and wife team Andy and Paula White, the family-run business began with a simple but powerful idea back in 2018: to offer families a unique alternative to the traditional funeral procession, one that truly celebrates the lives of those whose hearts belonged to the haulage industry.
For Andy, the inspiration came naturally. A self-confessed petrol-head with a lifelong love of trucks and classic vehicles, he also held a genuine admiration for the funeral profession. Although he didn't gain his HGV Class 1 licence until the age of 40, his passion for trucks had been with him for decades.
One truck in particular had always been close to his heart.
For around fifteen years, Andy had owned a British classic ERF, one of the last to leave the famous Sandbach production line. Known affectionately as The Black Cat thanks to its striking black paintwork and Caterpillar C12 engine, it was a rare, top of the range model fitted with numerous factory extras. Today, very few examples remain in this specification, making it a truly special piece of British trucking history.
Andy shared his dream with Paula of transforming the ERF into a bespoke truck hearse, giving families the opportunity to say goodbye in a way that genuinely reflected their loved one's life.

It was an unforgettable Christmas gift from Paula that helped turn that dream into reality.
When Andy unwrapped a set of polished coffin rollers, he was understandably puzzled. They certainly weren't the most conventional Christmas present, but once he realised what they were, he immediately understood the message. It was Paula's way of telling him she believed in his vision and was ready to help make it happen.
Six months later, work began.
Alongside Andy was his best friend, Peter Lewis, whose forty years of experience in the haulage industry, combined with his skills as both a mechanic and Class 1 driver, proved invaluable throughout the build.
Together they poured countless hours into creating something unlike anything else on the road. Every detail was carefully considered, with subtle personal touches incorporated throughout the vehicle.
One particularly meaningful addition reflects Andy's lifelong love of Queen. The closing line from Bohemian Rhapsody, "Anyway the wind blows" felt like the perfect tribute to a truck driver's life. Today, those words proudly feature across the PNW fleet, quietly reminding families of the freedom, journeys and memories that define life on the road.

Sadly, during the build, Peter received the news that he had cancer.
Despite his diagnosis, he encouraged Andy to continue with the project, determined to see the dream become reality. When the truck was finally completed, it made its debut at its first truck show, where it was awarded first prize, a proud and emotional moment for everyone involved.
Peter remained a constant source of encouragement until the very end.
Following his passing, his family knew there was only one fitting way for him to make his final journey, with Andy behind the wheel of the truck they had built together.
It was a moment that reinforced everything PNW Carriage Masters had set out to achieve.
From that point on, the business became about far more than creating an eye-catching vehicle. It became about helping families celebrate lives in a deeply personal, meaningful way, offering a farewell that truly reflected the individual being remembered.
The ERF remains the flagship of the fleet today and will always hold a special place in Andy and Paula's hearts. As the truck that started it all, its heritage and personal history continue to make it a fitting tribute for those wanting a genuine HGV farewell.
As demand grew, so too did the fleet.
In 2023, Andy and Paula added another icon of the trucking world, a Renault Magnum. With its unmistakable styling and commanding presence, the Magnum was transformed into a bespoke hearse while offering a longer deck capable of accommodating bariatric caskets.
Like the ERF, it delivers an unforgettable presence while maintaining the dignity, professionalism and care expected on such an important day. For many families, it provides the perfect balance of character, individuality and respect.
This year saw another exciting addition with the arrival of a Scania Double Crew Cab truck hearse.
Thoughtfully renovated to complement the rest of the fleet, the Scania offers something entirely unique. The opportunity for up to seven family members to travel alongside their loved one during their final journey.
For many, remaining together during those final miles provides comfort and creates another deeply meaningful part of the farewell. Combining the unmistakable presence of a full-size truck hearse with practical passenger seating, it offers families another truly personal choice.
From one carefully restored ERF to a fleet of bespoke truck hearses recognised across the country, PNW Carriage Masters has grown from a heartfelt dream into a respected specialist service built on compassion, understanding and genuine passion.
For the couple, this has never simply been about trucks.
It is about listening to families, understanding what made each person unique and helping create a farewell that feels right. Their guiding motto, "Listening to You, Caring for Them," perfectly captures that philosophy.
Although funerals are never an easy subject to talk about, spending time with Andy and Paula makes it impossible not to appreciate the care, thought and dedication behind everything they do.
For those whose lives were shaped by the road, there can be no more fitting final journey than one taken aboard the kind of truck they loved throughout their lifetime, a final tribute that celebrates not only where they travelled, but the life they lived along the way.
